Enlarged Prostate Treatment – It’s All About Comfort
March 29, 2010 by Prostate Dr.
One of the most common ailments for men over the age of sixty is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH, also known as enlarged prostate, effecting an estimated fifty percent of men world wide. When it comes to the treatment and management of this condition, fortunately there are options. But what kinds of steps do you need to take to find the best enlarged prostate treatment for you? Here are some guidelines to finding your comfort.
First, you should consider the physical symptoms and decide whether you truly meet the criteria. To help determine if you might have an enlarged prostate, or even the severity, there are websites that have simple questionnaires. They may ask questions such as: Do you lose sleep for frequent urination? Do you limit your daily activities to stay near a restroom? Are you unable to delay urination? Do you suffer from incontinence? Do you have a weak urine stream? After urinating do you still feel unfinished? Fill out a few of these questionnaires. This serves two purposes: One, to give you a better idea if you should follow up with a urologist appointment. Two, through the questions asked on the website, you may find a urologist that is a better fit to you for your enlarged prostate treatment, should you decide to follow with an appointment.
Second, find a urologist you can trust and feel the most comfortable with. You can use the excuse of needing a second opinion, but seeing different urologists for a consultation and their diagnosis, again, has multiple benefits. Not only will it give you a better idea of who you'll feel most comfortable seeking enlarged prostate treatment with, should you need to, but it will also give you a more definite verdict.
Third, know that you have options where enlarged prostate treatments are concerned. And all of these treatments have their own advantages and disadvantages. Knowing the pros and cons to each treatment proposed will help you decide which one is best for you. Medication is the most common method of treatment. While it is noninvasive, it is also costly after time and when you stop taking it, it stops working. Another form of treatment is surgery. Urologists do what they can to ensure your comfort, but it is more invasive. It frees you from having to take medication daily, but chances are you will need to repeat the surgery within a few years. There are also a number of non-surgical enlarged prostate treatments. These are less invasive, out-patient procedures with shorter recovery time.
As with any medical procedure, results will vary no matter what enlarged prostate treatment you choose. The bottom line should be what you're comfortable with. And what will ensure your comfort after everything's said and done.
